Requirements for photo content on Amazon listings

High-quality photos are the business card for sellers, as they are the first thing potential customers notice. Additionally, product images are one of the most valuable marketing tools – in conditions of high competition, a good image can make your product stand out among similar ones, inspire trust among the target audience, and ultimately influence their decision in your favor.

What should images on a listing look like?

For each product on a listing, one or several photos are required. The main image is called “main”. It is displayed first in search results and on the pages viewed by buyers, so it is in your best interest to make it as presentable as possible.

When creating the main image, pay attention to Amazon’s recommendations:

  • The photo should only display the main product that the buyer will receive – without using text, logos, watermarks;
  • The photo should be professional;
  • The photo should be placed on a white background;
  • It should have a resolution of at least 1000 pixels so that it remains clear when zoomed in;
  • The product should occupy 80% of the photo area, with the remaining space for the background;
  • Drawings and illustrations of the product are not allowed;
  • It should be in the RGB color mode only;
  • It should comply with acceptable file formats – JPEG, TIFF or GIF. JPEG is preferred;
  • Books, music, video/DVD images should display the cover and fill 100% of the image frame;
  • A total of 9 images can be uploaded.

Amazon gives sellers more freedom to create additional photos – you can use infographics, cropped or close-up images, as well as additional items to demonstrate the product in action or its scale. Since the buyer cannot physically touch your product, your task is to create a good first impression. Make your photos as high-quality and informative as possible.

Now let’s compare these two images:

In the first case, the seller made an unsuccessful attempt to take a photo by themselves and did not take care of its quality. Moreover, the product itself does not inspire any trust.

In the second case, we see a professional image on a white background that demonstrates the advantages, quality of the product, and the seller’s responsibility.

From whom would you buy a leash for your dog?

Conclusion:

 If the photo content on your listing does not meet the recommended standards, take the time to improve it. Well-lit, high-resolution photos taken on a white background will provide you with 50% success and help you surpass most competitors. Amazon is saturated with products that have poor photo content, so having quality images that are pleasant to look at will generate much more interest (clicks and sales) than unoptimized listings.
